Around Thanksgiving 2013 we noticed that Benji seemed to be coughing a lot. We took him to vet who diagnosed him with an upper respiratory infection. We put him on steroids and antibiotics for a couple weeks and we noticed that his cough didn't get better, per se, but it did change.

So we took him back to the vet and ran some tests and it was determined that he was in the early stages of Chronic Heart Failure and had started to develop fluid in his lungs. So we decided to try him out on some prescription diuretic to remove the fluid. Well within a couple days he was in full blown renal failure. It was to the point that by the time we got him back to the vet they were pretty much telling us we would probably have to put him down.

Now I do have to give my vet credit, he did not want to give up that easily and suggested that we try keeping him there and giving him IV fluids for a couple days. well this did the trick and we were able to bring him how a couple days later. But it wasn't long after that that we started to see him declining again. so we took him back, they kept him overnight again and gave him more fluids. When I picked him up the next day we were told that we would need to give him IV fluids subcutaneously every couple days. So we did. and in the mean time, I started doing some research online to see what I could do for him.

That's when I found Five Leaf. Now I will say this, I was a little skeptical at first, especially because every vet I spoke to about it.

For his food, we used the beef and rice recipe from the 5 Leaf booklet. Instead of the chicken jerky treats he used to get, we cut slices of peeled sweet potato and baked them for simulated jerky treats (sliced at ¼” and baked 3 hrs at 250, flipped halfway through). Buddy liked the sweet potato a lot but didn’t take to the beef and rice recipe right away. Especially not with the greens mixed in. We had to back off the greens to get him to eat it.

This continued for 3 cycles.

We also switched his watering to just distilled water. We upped his exercise as well.

We have already been recommending 5 Leaf to other pet owners and will continue to do so.

Thank you does not seem to be sufficient but THANK YOU!

It is a great program, and if you are thinking, hesitating about using it, please don't. I talked to Helen on the phone quite a bit. In fact I think I became a pest. But they are always very helpful explaining how to use the products and will always return your calls. I forgot to mention that my vet was not onboard with this program. As a lot of vets, they know nothing about nutrition. That is what this program is all about. Herbs, supplements, greens and homemade food. I have learned so much this past year about dog food, please everyone if you can make your own food for your fur baby, do so. It is the best and nutritious and you know what they are eating.
